Nipigon River Bridge

The project required the removal of the existing 1970’s bridge structure completely, along with the remaining piers (built in 1936). Our team of engineers devised an innovative plan to roll the 827′ bridge off the existing piers.

The old bridge was jacked-up in order to install hydraulic drives and a water protection platform, while overhangs and concrete decking were removed to reduce the structural weight. King post bracing was installed, and our team began to roll the bridge— trimming concrete and steel every 50′ until it was complete. The east-bound lanes of the future structure will follow the existing bridge alignment, while the west-bound lanes will be located to the north of the existing structure.

PDI IN ACTION

Nipigon River Bridge
PDI Project Comment
PDI’s in house engineer along with our sub-trade Western Mechanical, focused on a methodology that allowed the bridge to be rolled off of the existing piers to minimize the risk of debris falling in the waterway, and to give easy access to PDI’s equipment at the shoreline for material separation.
