880 Bay Street
Priestly Demolition was awarded the deconstruction of a seven 7-storey building located in the heart of downtown Toronto. Built in 1947 and owned by the Provincial Government of Ontario, the building totaled approximately 170,000 sq/ft. PDI’s contract included the removal of designated substances, and the disentanglement and decommissioning of the building’s mechanical and electrical services, fire alarms, security components, and other utilities integrated with the Queen’s Park complex located next door at 900 Bay Street.
The structure consisted predominately of reinforced concrete, with each floor framed as typical slab on steel deck sup-ported by concrete beams. The roof structure was constructed of lightweight precast panels and roofing membrane. The building’s façade was a combination of red brick and limestone panels; which were to be salvaged along with various elevator components.
Key challenges:
- Working in the heart of downtown Toronto on Bay Street in the heart of the financial district
- Ensuring safety and access for the tens of thousands of pedestrians who pass the site daily
